Omicron Delta Kappa Celebrates New Members

Meredith A. Beavers Receives Omicron Delta Kappa Scholarship
Meredith A. Beavers (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 2020) is a 2022-23 recipient of an Omicron Delta Kappa General Scholarship. Beavers graduated summa cum laude from Virginia Tech (VT) with a Bachelor of Arts with a major in smart and sustainable cities. In addition, she received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in political science and minors in leadership and social change and visual arts. While at VT, Beavers studied abroad in Switzerland and Ethiopia, spent a semester on co-op at a local planning commission, and was selected to represent her school at a national leadership conference. She held numerous leadership roles, including serving as a residence hall president, college ambassador, and orientation leader. Beavers also held the position of vice president for honorifics for her ODK circle. In recognition of her leadership, service, and professionalism, Beavers was awarded the Virginia American Planning Undergraduate with Professional Promise Award, College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences Dean's Round Table Scholarship, and the Aspire! Award for Embracing Ut Prosim ("That I May Serve") as a Way of Life. Beavers is attending the University of Virginia's School of Architecture, pursuing a master's degree in urban plus environmental planning.

Nicholas R. Barber Receives Omicron Delta Kappa Scholarship
Nicholas R. Barber (Mercer University, 2021) is a 2022-23 recipient of an Omicron Delta Kappa General Scholarship. Barber graduated magna cum laude from Mercer University in May 2022 with a bachelor's degree in business management. While at Mercer, he was initiated into and participated in honor societies such as Beta Gamma Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Eta Sigma. Barber served as a student instructor for the school's principles of finance course, vice president of Omicron Delta Kappa, vice chair of College Republicans, and student correspondent on the Student Government Association's Campus Safety and Improvements Committee. He was a member of Mercer's Judicial Council and Mercer's Honor Council. In recognition of his dedication to the development of the university, Barber was awarded the BEAR Award for Outstanding Campus Involvement at the Student Leadership Awards Ceremony. He also received the Outstanding Award in Management presented at the Honor's Convocation Ceremony. He is currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration with a finance concentration and a Fintech graduate certificate at Mercer University.

Teresa Aires Receives Omicron Delta Kappa Scholarship
Teresa Aires is a 2022-23 recipient of an Omicron Delta Kappa Kenneth P. Ruscio (Washington and Lee University) Scholarship. Aires graduated cum laude from Washington and Lee University (W&L) in 2019. After earning her Bachelor of Science with a double major in business administration and society, Aires enrolled at Maastricht University in The Netherlands. There, she continued her studies in organizational behavior. She graduated cum laude from Maastricht with a Master of Science with a major in work and organizational psychology. Much of Aires' master's research focused on sleep deprivation's impact on employees' state of mindfulness. As an undergraduate at W&L, Aires was involved with the ski and snowboard club and the school's Center for International Education. In addition, she was a resident advisor, peer counselor, campus tour guide, and student assistant. After earning her master's degree, Aires worked as an organizational psychologist at Vitamina P, a private practice in Lisbon, Portugal. She has begun her Ph.D., majoring in business administration with a concentration in management, at Arizona State University's W. P. Carey School of Business.

Jenna M. Walmer Receives Omicron Delta Kappa Scholarship
Jenna M. Walmer (Bridgewater College, 2017) is a 2022-23 recipient of an Omicron Delta Kappa General Scholarship. Walmer is currently a Ph.D. student at Syracuse University (SU) in the social psychology program. Her current research addresses why people downplay the severity of human trafficking. At SU, she is also a teaching assistant for the introductory psychology course and led recitations. After her first year as a doctoral student, Walmer was selected to be an instructor of record for the course. Prior to enrolling at Syracuse, Walmer graduated from West Chester University of Pennsylvania (WCU) with a Master of Art with a major in Holocaust and genocide studies. She also received a Master of Science with a major in psychology at WCU. While there, Walmer co-wrote a book chapter on diary studies in higher education and an article on her master's thesis. In 2019, she graduated from Bridgewater College, where she was initiated into ODK. Since becoming a member of the Society, Walmer has been involved with its Student Advisory Board and National Awards Committee. Outside of her academic endeavors, Walmer coaches a local swim team and volunteers at the crime victims center.

Kevin K. Dua Honored with ODK's 2022 Emerging Leader for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Award
Kevin K. Dua, a resident of Reading, Massachusetts, is the 2022 recipient of Omicron Delta Kappa's (ODK) Emering Leader for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Award. Dua is a 2017 initiate of the Eta Circle (chapter) at William & Mary. As an undergraduate, he worked on everything from community building activities from service and leadership to residence hall community building. Dua even secured a Guinness World Record for the most people doing the Thriller Dance. He is currently a member of the William & Mary Student Engagement and Leadership Advisory Board. Dua was the Massachusetts 2017 History Teacher of the Year and is a two-time Massachusetts Teachers' Association's Human and Civil Rights awardee. He is a current member of the Ideation UpLift Legacy Cohort for K-12 Black Male Educators. Currently, Dua is a history and psychology teacher at Cambridge Rindge and Latin School in Massachusetts. He introduced his expertise into discussions on anti-racism, unlearning, and strategies to increase equity in education in the age of Covid. Previously, Dua resurrected and served as an advisor to the award-winning Black Student Union in Cambridge. Over the years, he has become a relied upon leader and ally in examining the Black Lives Matter movement and its impact on teaching.

Brent D. Scholar Honored with the 2022 ODK Community Commitment Award for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity
Brent D. Scholar, a resident of Phoenix, Arizona, is the 2022 recipient of the Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) Community Commitment for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity. Scholar is a 2018 faculty/staff initiate of the Arizona State University Circle (chapter) of ODK and a lecturer in the Department of Leadership and Integrative Studies at the university. Since 2011, he has been a member of the Diversity Leadership Alliance (DLA), the premiere diversity education organization in Arizona, and has been a part of the DLA's education and conference committees. In 2020, Scholar began directing the DLA's online Conversations to Ignite Change, providing education and discussion forums for more than 1,000 members about identifying racism, implicit bias, micro/macro aggressions, and how to be anti-racist. He also started the DLA's Equity Corner - a one-hour follow-up to monthly workshops where members can come together to discuss their efforts to be more inclusionary in their organizations and lives. More recently, Scholar has collaborated with E. I. Games to include game simulations that are based on empathy. In 2019, he was asked to review the company's Emotional Intelligent Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity Game. Scholar's thoughtful feedback ultimately led to the game winning a gold medal at the Serious Play Awards in 2020.

Joel D. Hermann Honored with the 2022 ODK Morlan-Bishop Outstanding Circle Officer Award
Joel D. Hermann, a 2007 collegiate initiate of the Maryville University Circle (chapter) of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), is a resident of St. Louis, Missouri. Hermann is the 2022 recipient of ODK's Morlan-Bishop Outstanding Circle Officer Award. The Fontbonne University Circle, under Hermann's leadership as an advisor, has been celebrated as one of the Society's very best, receiving circle recognition honors in six different years. In addition, the circle has secured two Clay Grants during his tenure. Hermann has supported the members of the Fontbonne University Circle in their efforts to collaborate with other organizations on campus, encouraged his circle members to achieve academically, and worked with them to increase the diversity found in the membership. Hermann has been involved in planning ODK's 2016, 2018, and 2022 national conferences and conventions. He is a former member of the ODK National Advisory Council, served on the Membership Committee, and is a former recipient of the Eldridge W. Roark, Jr., Meritorious Service Award. Professionally, Hermann is the senior director of leadership and community engagement at Fontbonne.

John Herbst Honored With the 2022 Morgan Award from Omicron Delta Kappa
John H. Herbst, a resident of Lexington, Kentucky, received the 2022 John D. Morgan Award for Lifetime Service to Omicron Delta Kappa during an awards ceremony on June 4, 2022. Herbst was initiated into the University of Kentucky's Nu Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa in 1985. He served as the faculty secretary and circle coordinator of the circle from 1991-2019. From 2006-10, Herbst was a regional director for ODK. He was national convention chair in 2002, when the Society's conference was held in Lexington, Kentucky. Herbst has also been a member of the General Council and a faculty province director. He has also served as parliamentarian for the 2006, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018 conventions. Herbst is currently National Parliamentarian Emeritus and Trustee Emeritus. A recipient of both the Eldridge W. Roark, Jr. Meritorious Service Award and the Cheryl M. Hogle Distinguished Service Award, Herbst chaired the Society's National Public Relations Committee and the National Awards Committee. He was a member of the National Advisory Council from 2010-16. The University of Kentucky Circle Endowed ODK Scholarship has been named in his honor. At the University of Kentucky (UK), Herbst served as the executive director of the Student Center from 1997 until his retirement in 2019. Previously, he was the director of student activities at UK. Herbst has been recognized nationally as both the Outstanding Student Government Advisor (2000) and the Outstanding Student Activities Director (1985), and he has also served on the national Board of Directors of the National Association for Campus Activities. In addition to his responsibilities as director of the student center, Herbst also served as the University Commencement Committee Chairman and was on the university's SACS Reaffirmation of Accreditation Team. He has also been a University Student Affairs Crisis Response Team member and is FEMA certified as a Campus-Community Emergency Response Team Trainer.

Troy University announces Chancellor's List for Fall Semester/Term 2
Troy University is pleased to announce students who have been named to the Chancellor's List for the Fall Semester and Term 2 of the 2021/2022 academic year. Full-time undergraduate students who are registered for at least 12 semester hours and who earn a grade point average of 4.0 qualify for the Chancellor's List. The Fall Semester includes students at the Troy, Ala., campus. Term 2 includes students at TROY's campuses in Dothan, Phenix City and Montgomery, Ala., along with locations outside of Alabama and online.

Majority of cadets get first choice branch for upcoming Army officer assignments
Nearing the mid-point of their senior year, more than 70 cadets at The Citadel now know what branch of the Army they will enter after graduation. The soon-to-be Army officers received their branch assignments during a ceremony on Dec. 1 in Summerall Chapel.

Bill Latture Wins Morgan Award from Omicron Delta Kappa
William "Bill" Latture, a resident of Greensboro, North Carolina, received the 2021 John D. Morgan Award for Lifetime Service to Omicron Delta Kappa during a special virtual awards ceremony held on December 3, 2021. Latture, a 1948 initiate of the Washington and Lee University Circle (chapter), has been involved with ODK throughout his entire life. He was a long-time member of the Society's Foundation Board of Trustees and is an emeritus trustee of the Omicron Delta Kappa Society and Educational Foundation. He currently serves the Society as a member of its Board Awards Committee. Latture and his wife Louise have supported the Society in multiple capacities. They established the Rupert Nelson Latture Scholarship, named for Bill's father, who was one of the original 15 founders of the Society. In addition, they helped with the fundraising to purchase the historic train station, which houses the organization's national headquarters. They also funded the Louise H. and William E. Latture Endowed Scholarship. Latture has served Washington and Lee University in numerous volunteer capacities. He is also a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. In addition to serving his alma mater, Latture served in the U. S. Navy from 1943-46, where he attained the rank of Lt. (JG). He is an Eagle Scout, served as a Scoutmaster, and was a long-time board member of the Old North State Council. Latture is also the recipient of the Boy Scouts of America's Silver Beaver Award and is a member of the 1910 Society. Latture retired in 1982 after 33 years as an executive with Blue Bell, Inc. He served as chairman of the Textile and Needle Trades Division of the American Society for Quality Control and received its Distinguished Service Award. Latture is also a past president of the Greensboro Historical Museum. He is also the co-founder and past president of the Belle Meade Society. Latture has been a member of Summit Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He has been active with the Greensboro Mental Health Association, the Greensboro Opera, and his church. He and his wife are long-time residents of Greensboro, North Carolina. Since 2007, the Lattures have lived at Well Spring Retirement Community, where he is a past president of its Residents' Association.

Klarke J. Stricklen Named 2022 Rhodes Scholar
Klarke J. Stricklen (Sewanee - The University of the South, 2021) has been selected as a 2022 Rhodes Scholar. Stricklen, a senior majoring in American studies and minoring in African American studies, is from Chattanooga. In addition to being a member of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK), she is a member of Phi Alpha Theta, the history honor society. At Sewanee, Stricklen has worked as a student research assistant for the Roberson Project on Slavery, Race, and Reconciliation. She is also a member of the campus chapter of NAACP and the Roberson Project working group. In addition to her selection as a Rhodes Scholar, Stricklen has also been chosen to receive a Truman Scholarship. At Sewanee, she was previously the recipient of the Isabel Caldwell Marks Memorial Scholarship and the Davis Family Scholarship for leadership and community service. At Oxford, she plans to pursue a Master of Science and major in economics and social history.

Jonathan Zobek Receives ODK Scholarship to Attend Salus University, College of Health Sciences
Jonathan Zobek, a native of Kenilworth, N.J., received a $1,000 scholarship from Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) to attend graduate school at Salus University, College of Health Sciences. Zobek graduated magna cum laude from The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in 2020 with a bachelor's degree with a major in communication studies and a concentration in interpersonal/organizational communication. While at TCNJ, he was the treasurer of Catholic Campus Ministry and a disc jockey for the school's radio station. In recognition of his academic success, Zobek was inducted into Lambda Pi Eta. He also served as president of TCNJ's Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa. Zobek co-wrote an article about universal design for learning, which was accepted for a poster session for the 2020 Educause E.L.I. Annual Meeting. Outside the classroom, he served as president of the New Jersey Association of Blind Students, a division of the National Federation of the Blind of New Jersey. He also was a volunteer for the National Homework Hotline, where he helped blind and low-vision students with technology and braille. Zobek is currently attending Salus University and is working toward earning his Master of Education degree with a focus on the education of students with visual impairments.
